A FEAST FOR THE EYES

I yanked Tali back as Ritus snapped, and rushed to the door as the others darted through. Outside, I slammed it shut and gasped, "Let's go," before we chased after everyone.

"Was nice dragon," said Tali happily.

I glanced at her, dumbfounded, then asked, "Seriously? You like him?"

"Very wise. And we try to steal. Was fair he want to eat us."

"I suppose you're right. You really weren't afraid?"

"Not afraid of anything. Just dragon. Could fight. Not win, but would be proud to try."

"Please don't. He'll snap you like a twig."

"Not matter, am immortal. Be fixed straight away."

"Tali, I hate to break the news to you, but I think dragons can kill other dragons. Remember the book?"

As we ran, Tali turned to me and frowned. "Not remember that. Is true?"

"Yes. He can take your essence. If you bleed out, he can feast on you and then he will have your essence like you took the witch's, and then you'll be dead."

Tali smiled, and said, "Then best run faster," as she sped ahead.

I caught up with her and the others, although Nava put on a burst of speed and raced off as a thunderous boom shook the passage. I turned to see Ritus careening from the room as the doorway expanded. He slammed into the pillars opposite before great round slabs of rock shattered around him. Part of the roof caved in on him as more of the pillar crashed down, but he erupted from the wreckage, shook himself off, and searched first the opposite way we'd run, then looked in our direction.

"You will die," he hissed. His threat reverberated off the walls, and then he raced after us, wings spreading as he began to flap them gently to circulate his immortal blood.

I turned back ahead and ran faster, hoping Nava had done what I expected him to.

"Get ready to morph," I shouted, then took Tali's hand and nodded to Shi as he grabbed Charles'. As we thundered towards the pit, I spied Nava, three times his regular size, body a twisted mess, right at the edge. He was going to fall.

"Faster," I warned Tali, and we redoubled our efforts and raced to our friend.

Nava began to disappear, but I ducked low, scooped him under his belly, and we morphed.

Pain even worse than the last time swallowed me whole; I doubted it would ever end. But it did in an instant, and I was rolling along the ground of a great hallway with Nava tumbling beside me. Tali appeared just up ahead, her momentum sending her crashing into a pillar. Charles and Shi appeared on the opposite side, lost to shadow, but judging by their howls and screams they'd made it in one piece, if as battered and bruised as the rest of us.

I stumbled to my feet despite feeling disconnected from my body, and ignored the pounding in my head and the ringing in my ears. I raced to Nava and slid to a halt. "You okay? Thanks for saving us.
